Paper

It is advisable to not bundle newspapers for collection. For utilisation, printing colour is washed off the reclaimed paper. The pulp is used for producing newsprint or soft tissue paper.

Collecting and transportation

Waste paper is widely collected at the area collection points. It is also collected on-site at the larger households.

Paper is transporter from the collection points to the sorting facilities.

Handling

At the sorting facility, reclaimed paper is sorted into different types, cleaned, baled if necessary, stored and provided to factories as raw material.

Recycling and recovery

Newspapers and other household reclaimed paper is deinked i.e. the print colour is washed off. The deinked pulp is used for producing newsprint or soft tissue paper. Light office paper is also deinked and the resulting pulp is used to produce soft tissue for a variety of products, such as toilet paper, paper towels and paper tissue.

In the paper industry, reclaimed paper is used as raw material for printing paper, soft tissue and paperboard.

Responsible organizers

In Finland the producers and importers of paper and paper products are responsible for the collection and recycling of waste paper.
