Different types of plastic is processed for use as recycled raw material and new products.

Household empty plastic packaging

  • Plastic food packaging (e.g. yoghurt cups, butter tubs, cheese packaging and ready-meal trays)
  • Detergent packaging
  • Other household plastic packaging, bottles and jars (e.g. plastic bottles, cans, jars, tubes, packaging for toys, tools, garden, and fishing gear etc.)
  • Plastic bags, pouches and wrappers
  • Styrofoam packaging and other plastic fillers

Remember

Any packaging that contains residues of dangerous substances and pressurised packaging (e.g. paint, chemicals, oils, medicines, hairspray) must be taken to your local hazardous waste collection point.

Collecting and transportation

Collected plastic packaging waste is sent to Fortum’s Plastic Refinery.

Handling

Household plastic packaging is taken to Fortum’s Plastic Refinery in Riihimäki.

Recycling and recovery

Fortum sorts plastic packages into different types of plastic which is processed for use as recycled raw material and new products. All plastic packaging waste cannot yet be recycled. The waste that cannot be recycled is used as energy. No packaging waste is taken to landfill.
