Textiles (reusable)

Bring usable, intact and clean clothes, shoes and accessories packed in bags. There maybe regional collection points for rags and textiles to be discarded. If there is no other collection, rags belong in energy or mixed waste.

Always observe local and collection point specific instructions! The following are some general guidelines based on prevailing practices.

  • towels
  • sheets
  • other clean and dry textiles that are no longer used

Remember

Only intact, clean and usable clothes belong are collected. Please do not overload a charitable organisation’s clothes collection with waste.

Pack the clothes in normal plastic bags.

Collecting and transportation

Collected textiles and clothes are transported from the collection points to sorting.

Handling

Often, sorting happens in two phases: gross and fine sorting. From sorting, the clothes go either to charity or for sale.

Recycling and recovery

Most of the sorted clothes go for reuse in Africa. Some of the clothes go to wholesale in Finland, some to stores and the rest are rags or waste
